Earlier this week we incorrectly referenced Softbank Corporation in this post. We have removed that reference to them at the request of the customer and apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Yesterday we announced that 1 person is signing up to try Office 365 every 25 seconds, and that enterprises like the American Red Cross have already become Office 365 customers. This comes on the heels of our launch just two weeks ago.

Clearly, Office 365 is a hit with companies of all sizes, and today we are making several announcements that indicate it’s a hit with partners, too.

Since July 2010, the Office 365 partner ecosystem has more than doubled in size – taking us from 16,000 to more than 41,000 partners worldwide. We now officially have the largest partner community for the cloud in the industry, with approximately 10 times more partners than Google!e!

Microsoft provides several different kinds of software updates for Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. Before you study the details of these updates, it is recommended that you learn the key terminology. The following table provides information about the software update terminology used by Microsoft.

Software update concepts and terminology

Concepts and terms	Description and definition
Hotfix	A single cumulative package composed of one or more files used to address a problem in a product. Hotfixes address a specific customer situation and may not be distributed outside that customer organization.
Public update	A public update is usually a security-related hotfix that is released publically and is available for download. The Windows update configuration can identify these updates and install them automatically. You link to public updates from security bulletins. Typically, these hotfixes are released as required. Service packs are another example of a public update.
Service pack	A tested, cumulative set of all hotfixes, security updates, critical updates and updates, as well as additional fixes for problems found internally since the release of the product. Service packs can also contain a limited number of customer-requested design changes or features.
Scheduled delivery model	Microsoft Office is moving away from the current priority-driven hotfix release model to a scheduled delivery model. In the scheduled delivery model, hotfixes are released every two months. This schedule creates more predictability for customers. Customers who need an emergency fix can request a shorter turnaround time for a hotfix. The following delivery mechanisms support this new approach. · cumulative update (CU) · critical on-demand (COD) hotfix For more information, see Cumulative updates are available from the Microsoft Office team to deliver hotfixes for reported problems .
Cumulative update	A collection of hotfixes released every two months. A cumulative update (CU) rolls up previously released hotfixes and cumulative updates. A CU is sometimes called an update rollup. Available hotfixes include the following: · Fixes for issues that meet hotfix acceptance criteria. These criteria include workaround availability, effect on customers, reproducibility, and the complexity of the code that must be changed. · Any critical on-demand hotfixes that are currently released. · Any critical security or non-security updates that are currently released. For more information, see Office hotfixes to be delivered on a defined schedule in the form of Cumulative Updates (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=133358&clcid=0x409) blog post.
Critical on-demand (COD) hotfix	A critical on-demand (COD) hotfix is available to address critical problems that cannot be handled via the cumulative update delivery cycle. COD fixes are limited to emergency situations, for example, one in which the issue is blocking normal business operations for the customer, and/or for which there is no effective workaround. Critical on-demand (COD) hotfixes are included in the next cumulative update that is released. Note: COD releases have the versioning pattern 12.0.xxxx.500X. An example is a CU released with the version 12.0.6327.5000, with a COD hotfix subsequently required. In this example, the version of the COD hotfix is 12.0.6327.5001. If additional hotfixes are required before the next CU, the next version number is 12.0.6327.5002, and so on until the next CU is released.
Package	The downloaded item, an executable (.exe) file that is downloaded for a update rollup or hotfix. A package can contain one or more patches. Depending on the download mechanism that is provided, this executable file might be wrapped inside another password-protected executable file. After you extract the package, you have one or more .exe files that use a Knowledge Base (KB) number as part of its name; for example, Webfldrs-KB907306-ENU.exe. In this example, most customers run the Webfldrs-KB907306-ENU.exe executable file when they update their SharePoint servers.
Patch	Patches are stored inside packages. The patches run Windows Installer program (msiexec.exe) to update the original installation packages (which have the .msi file name extension) with new information or binaries. Patches that are installed by the Windows Installer program have the .msp file name extension. You can extract patches to a common folder to create a slipstream version of the patch. For more information, see Create an installation source that includes software updates (Windows SharePoint Services 3.0) or Create an installation source that includes software updates (Office SharePoint Server 2007).
Localized patch	A localized patch, or local patch, contains updates to language-specific strings or related code.
Global patch	A global patch is language-agnostic and can be applied to any server regardless of the base installation language or whether language packs are installed. Most software updates are delivered by means of global patches.
Upgrader	An upgrader is a specific piece of the product that evaluates the current state of related objects and possibly alters them to match newer schema, enable new functionality, or correct known issues.

Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 - Good News for SharePointers

In an interview of Chris Capossela, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Information Worker Product Management Group announce the timeline for realeasing Office SharePoint Server 2010.

Microsoft will begin releasing new versions of Office-related products this year. Exchange 2010 will be the first product.

Office 2010 — including Office Web applications, SharePoint Server 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 — will enter a technical preview in the third quarter of 2009 and will release to manufacturing in the first half of 2010.

Office Service Pack team announced Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 would be available on April 28th. It provides many fixes and performance improvements, as well as some new features. Also with the new service pack, Internet Explorer 8 will be added into browser support matrix as level one, and Firefox 2.0 and 3.0 as level two. We recommend every customer to start planning their patch window to apply this service pack. Please look out for more details on April 28^th.

RSUG March-09 Meeting - Microsoft Innovation Center - Riyadh (KSA)

I was in Microsoft Innovation Center-Riyadh to speak on Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007.

I had 35 minute time slot followed by 5 mins Q/A, the session went well and I believe audience enjoyed it. I focused on some of the core functionalities in Office InfoPath 2007 and demo of SharePoint integration with Office InfoPath 2007. Presentation is made available at Riyadh SharePoint User Group web Site. Target audiences were 65 in no. Presenters were Yasir Jerry (Senior SharePoint Consultant - Ejada), Ali Nimer , Tariq Younas , Amjad Manasara & Areej.

When we use Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 to add a Custom List Form Web Part on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site. Then, you try to attach a file by clicking Attach File in the custom form on the Web site. When you do this, you receive the following error message: "This form was customized not working with attachment."

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Apply hotfix 953749.

Yesterday I talked about Microsoft SharePoint Technology in 1st session of [SharePoint A-Z Training] in Ad-dammam- Saudi Arabia. It was an amazing experience meeting and discussion about SharePoint technology with technology geeks of local development community.

I’ll dive in details about topics like (MOSS 2007) administration/ development with demos and hans-on labs in next sessions of this training series. Coffee and snacks were served in break. Special thanks to Mr. Fauzan & Al-JEHAT Training Centre.

Root Cause:

This happend after you change URL for your site on SharePoint Portal.

How You Can Fix It?
1- Remove all lists from quick launch (from each list settings page).

2- Go to settings-> modify navigation and remove all (corrupted) lists and & folders from quick launch

3- Add lists back to quick launch again

SharePoint Farm Migration Looop

Recently i have finished my SharePoint Farm Migration from 32 bit OS to 64 bit task.
There were lot of things to share.
Let me share you loop which i use as action plan for migration on Live Production Farm.
We had 20 Major Portals...mean 20 web applications.

So, what i did

For Portal=1 to 20
{
1- Plan a portal lock time (Read only ~ 3 hours)
2- Notify Power User & Account Admin
3- Send an interruption message to the affected site
4- On the planned time:
a. freeze the portal (Read Only)
b. Backup the portal from the current production farm
c. Restore it to the test farm
d. Check the design
e. Do a random test
f. Send a test link to the power user
g. If it is ok, do another restore to the new production farm
h. Do a test on the new production
i. If it is ok, update DNS record to the new IP
j. Check with power user for confirmation
k. Send a service back notification
l. Stop the old portal on Old Servers
loop

Sharepoint Portal site is showing [System Account] instead of my username

Problem: After installation of my MOSS testing server when I login with my username & password into SharePoint Portal site, it was showing me "System Account" instead of my username on the top right corner of the Site.
Any activity which I was performing like updating system, updating lists, creating new document was stamping system account instead of “Tariq Younas”

Reason: While installation if you will use your account, it will be used to create SharePoint db. At that time you account will be marked as system account.

Solution:
If you face such type of problem then use stsadm utility and run this command
stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -identitytype NetworkService
After running command restart your IIS

Also set your pool identity as NetWorkService account by performing these steps

1- Go to run
2- Write “inetmgr” and press OK
3- Here under application pools, select your application pool and right click
4- On identity tab select radio “predefined” Network service

This will not occur again.

Redirect to a custom page after entering item in SharePoint List

Most of the time we need to redirect user after submitting on list on our custom page like Thanks You page.
Here i have custom list by name of "Feedback" and basic page "Thanks".

When user will submit his/her feedback in library he/she will be redirected to thanks page.

1- Create a basic page for Thanks Message.

2- Name it and press create

3- Go to site navigation Site Settings-> Modify Navigation

4- Select the link of library where you want to submit new item and then want to rout on another thanks page

5- As i have Feedback is List and i am giving path..................
To redirect users to your Thanks/Custom page after they have completed the feedback, simply add ?SOURCE=Your_Thanks_Page.

Office SharePoint Server Search stuck in Stopping Status

Today when I get entered in my office I received a number of emails that
“Search is not working”
“Dear Mr. Tariq Younas, we are unable to search leave application form,”
“What’s wrong with search”

There was a long list of emails like that…..when I open our index server I found this server is in stopping state and unable to show restart/start options.

After some search we found a work around.

Go to Application (Search index and query server) Server

1. Start command prompt

2. Run taskkill /F /IM mssearch.exe /T

3. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12 \bin folder and run “psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait –force”

It show how to display your .swf flash file on Portal using content editor.
On msdn post there you will got a chunk of code....you just need to put that code in Content Editor Webpart and change its path.

While administrating my company SharePoint Portal our search services unable to stopped. Many times we try to stop it from different servers using central administration but they were continuous showing message.

Error Stopping

Workaround:
1- Go to run
2- Write services.msc and press Enter
3- Select & right click service [Windows SharePoint Services Search]
4- Stop it and restart from here

I suffered a lot due to connected flight & stay @ Doha airport about 7 hrs.

I was working on MySite. There i get need to add content query webpart as it facilitates to grab diff task etc from site collections and summarize on single spot.
Here i try to enable 'Office SharePoint Server Publishing' feature on a site collection thru

Site Settings > Site Administration > Site features

On clicking 'Activate' button I get the message

'One or more features must be turned on before this feature can be activated: Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure'

Solution

Here same problem was with Mark..he mention great explanation'Office SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure' site feature will not appear unless you are explicitly set as a Site Collection Administrator. and it worked for me. Great :)

Error: Cannot get the list schema column property from the SharePoint list

I was working on SharePoint list. When I open a list in datasheet view and export in Office 2003 Excel then I got a prompt error given below

“Cannot get the List Schema Column Property from the SharePoint list”

I fix that problem by changing the date column from my SharePoint List.
What you have to do is…simply remove your previous date column and add it again.

Do not delete your existed column. Copy your old column data in new column with different name. Then remove old column. Now it will work happily and your datasheet will export happily.

While accessing InfoPath form using browser an error occurs given below

This error normally occured on MS Office InfoPath Form while fetching data from data source.

Problem Example:

I have list "Employees" at my SharePoint Site.

And i am using MS InfoPath form to populate combobox from sharepoint list data.

After publishing form successfully when i access that form in browser i got this error 5566.

Reason:

Error occurs when the user who is using form which is going to populate from shareopint list data have not enough rights on SharePoint List.

Solution:

You must permit target user to read the list.
